I Have an App Idea. Now What?

You have an idea for an app. Maybe you've been thinking about it for months. Maybe years. But you have no idea what to do next. This guide walks you through it step by step.

Step 1: Write Down What Your App Should Do

You don't need a fancy document. Just answer these questions in plain English:

  • Who is this for? Describe the person who would use your app.
  • What problem does it solve? What are they struggling with today?
  • What are the must-have features? List 5 to 10 things it absolutely needs to do.
  • How will it make money? Subscriptions, one-time purchase, ads, or something else?

That's it. This one page is enough to start a conversation with a developer.

Step 2: Don't Build Yet. Plan First.

The biggest mistake first-time founders make is jumping straight into building. Before you spend $10,000 or more on development, spend $1,500 to $3,000 on a discovery phase.

A discovery phase gives you:

  • A full blueprint of every screen and feature
  • An accurate cost and timeline
  • Problems found on paper instead of mid-build

Think of it like getting an architect's blueprint before building a house.

Step 3: Find the Right Developer

Look for someone who:

  • Asks you questions about your business, not just the features
  • Shows you their past work with real apps you can download or visit
  • Gives you a clear price before starting, not "it depends"
  • Explains things in plain English. If they can't explain it simply, that's a red flag

Red Flags to Watch For

They can't show you past projects. They won't give you a price range. They want to start coding right away with no plan. They use lots of technical words and never explain them. Run.

Step 4: Know What to Expect on Cost and Time

A simple app with 5 to 10 screens usually costs $10,000 to $30,000 and takes 2 to 3 months. A more complex app with user accounts, payments, and admin tools can cost $30,000 to $80,000 and take 3 to 6 months.

These are rough numbers. The exact price depends on your specific features. That's why the discovery phase matters. It gives you real numbers before you commit.

Step 5: Start Small, Launch Fast

You don't need to build everything at once. Launch with the core features that solve the main problem. Get real users. Learn what works. Then add more features based on real feedback.

Every successful app started simple. Instagram launched with just photo filters. Uber launched in one city. Your app should start small too.
